Exiting Successfully

  • Huge Shock (angry, confused, worried, embarrassed)
  • One Thing you have control over – your response
  • How you respond can affect your relationship with former employer – and the support you’re able to get during this transition
  • You don’t have much control over situation – you do have control over yourself – you can choose to deal with it, to try act rather than react
  • People often have little time to make decisions & that can compound the stress
  • Think about what you might need during your transitional period while you’re looking for another position.
  • If you are offered a severence package review it before signing it – you may be able to negotiate benefits with your employer before you leave
  • Longer Tranisitional period – with the understanding you’re beginning the process of disengaging
  • Allow u use of the office (unpaid capacity) for a certain period of time
  • Permission to apply for other positions in the organisation, or consulting opps or temporary assignments
  • A reference
  • Use of Office equipment while u look 4 a job
  • Outplacement services
  • Info on stock options if they apply
  • Ensure that therre is no break in your health insurance.
  • Get the relevant Paperwork on your VHI or Bupa insurance. Also life insurance or anything else you had as an employee can theybe converted into individual policies?
  • Though this is an awkward time for you and your former colleagues, remember that with time and a well planned strategy you’ll be working again
  • Also you’re not alone! Other people have successfully made the transition to a new position – u can too!

  • Look at your finances – defer any unnecessary expenses
    Take a mortgage ‘holiday’
  • Brainstorm with your family on money saving tips
  • Establish a new set of routines & rythms
  • Set goals & schedules for various aspects of your job search
  • Even small things provide you with a sense of accomplishment
  • Get help if you need it – talk to a trusted friend, a business coach etc
  • You may need to update your CV – and adjust it to fit a job you’re going for interview
  • Be Proactive in the interview
  • By choosing some lifestyle and attitude adjustments you’ll be well on your way to finding a job
